At the core of my research is the historical reconstruction of a system of didactics grounded in the German theory of human formation, Bildung. School subjects such as language, social studies, mathematics, and science can, in broad terms, be traced back to the formation of modern schooling in early nineteenth century Europe. The question of why children should learn the domains of the humanities, social science, natural science, the sports, and the arts can be answered in many ways: economic reasons, political aims, social demands, developmental considerations, or the structure of academic disciplines. Among these, what I seek to foreground from a pedagogical perspective is the logic of Bildung. The process by which children reflect on the world they share with others and nature, confront themselves within it, and form their own selves has a certain meaning that differs from aims such as national development or the production of economically productive labor. My work explores how educational content and methods should be shaped from the viewpoint of Bildung, through tracing many thinkers and philosophers throughout the 19-20 centuries.
Building on this core, I also engage in related fields such as lesson analysis and Lesson Study, teacher professional development, educational reform, and the history of educational thought.
