My research focuses on the history of education for girls during the French Third Republic, especially secondary education for girls in Bordeaux. Secondary schools for girls in France have often been seen as places that prepared girls to become wives and mothers. My research asks what women living in a commercial city such as Bordeaux, especially those who attended these schools, expected from their education. I also examine what local communities and families expected of girls and from their education. Through these questions, I explore how secondary education for girls was shaped by the state, religion, gender, and social class.
